Delivered by Dolphins
While crewing on SV Dolphin 3 God answered prayer in a miraculous way. Just before sunset on July 1 we were approaching the western mouth to the Strait of Gibraltar (on the Atlantic side). We were hugging the southern coast of Spain to port and we could see the mountains of northern Morocco to starboard. What I didn't realize at the time is that this area has been plagued by an unusually aggressive pod of Orca whales. These Orcas for the last several years have attacked and disabled over 400 sailboats! [https://youtu.be/9ABCltYBUjI ].
Now, we had seen dolphins once in a while swimming beside the boat since we had left the port of A Caruna, Spain. But on this night an unusually huge pod of dolphins came swimming beside, behind, and under the boat. Their fins were rising all around us. As far as a football field around us we could see them. Ernst, the other crew member and I began to worship God in our hearts as we sensed His presence in the awesome wonder of his Creation. Ernst said, "It's so beautiful it makes me want to cry!"
Soon they left us as we made our way toward the Strait of Gibraltar. The sun went down and because I had the 2-5 AM watch that night I went below to get a few hours of sleep. Several hours later I woke up to join Robert and Ernst as we carefully made our way into the port of Gibraltar in the dark. We crept quietly beside many large freighters at anchor like tip-toeing around sleeping giants.
Then we heard the distress call of a sailboat on the marine radio around 3:30 AM. The voice of a woman in a British accent repeated the words over and over: "we are being attacked by orcas!" The Spanish Coast Guard replied and gave instructions to switch to a different channel.
We don’t know what happened to them after that. But hearing the call left us thanking God because we had just passed through that area! Then it occurred to us: that was exactly where the dolphins surrounded us! We found out the next morning that a group of Christian sailors (from the KingsFleet network) had been praying for God's protection from Orca attack that very day.
I read later that when dolphins sense danger "they frequently circle surround the person who is susceptible in a protective manner...to defend one another from any predators, like...orcas." [https://dolphinxpert.com/do-dolphins-attack-orcas/ ] This was truly answered prayer!
